Moving Beyond Disciplinary Boundaries to SoTL as Scholarly Work

Dr. S. Raj Chaudhury
University of South Alabama
Many seasoned academics often find our way to SoTL as a second
research pathway towards deeper understanding of student learning
and our own teaching. Steeped in disciplinary ways of knowing, we
learn to step outside those boundaries and embrace afresh scholarly
inquiry with methodologies and approaches different from ones we may
have trained on. The learning sciences literature makes us aware that
experts in one domain can become novices in another. Our academic
lives exist not only within disciplinary cultures but also must intersect
with our institutional cultures. Cultures can be affirming but they can
also be deterring. In this talk, I shall discuss some ideas viewing SoTL
work from a variety of different levels of academic impact, re-connect it
broadly to the Boyer model and also issue a challenge within an
international context.
